I was really apprehensive today, got to Tatton Park early and hung around for a couple of hours. Registered, then racked my bike and wandered over to watch the start. There were six waves, I was in the last wave. It was interesting watching the swimmers in the first waves, they started off in in big group, but by the time they were half way round they had settled into a line. The first guy came out of the water running!
I was one of the last ones into the water as I didn't want to get kicked or whatever else could happen at the start. The last wave was the super sprint and most if not all were newbies. I couldn't help but laugh at the guy next to me, all I could hear was "aargh, aargh, aaargh, its *** freezing" he was like that all the way to the start line.
The swim was as hard as I expected, I can't understand why swimming in open water is harder than in the baths. I was pleased with my front crawl, but still did a mixture of crawl and breast stroke. When I got out I was totally exhausted, thinking of that guy running out of the water, I could barely walk! I actually thought I was last, but as I was about to take my bike off the rack I heard the tannoy saying that the last swimmer was just out of the water! I did better than I thought.
I am quite strong on the bike, when I can stay on it that is, but I was so tired from the swim I found it a struggle. Having said that, I did pass a few people and the only ones who passed me were doing the sprint. (they were really moving).
The run was a mixture of walking and jogging, I got cramp in my calf - AGAIN!! I was announced as I went over the finish line, then I felt really flat. All you get is a cup of water because you get your goodie bag when you register. The guys from Urbis cheered me on and I did get clapped as I crossed the line, but as I had nobody waiting for me I just felt lost. As soon as transition opened, I collected my bike and came home.
Photos will be added along with my chip times as soon as I have them.
